Follow Up: Sparks prepares to open first new fire station in two decades

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The City of Sparks is set to open its first new fire station in 20 years as part of efforts to better serve its growing community. Fire Chief Walt White said the new Fire Station 6, located on Scheidbar Road near Pyramid Way, is nearing completion and will soon be operational. “This is a project that’s been in the works with the City of Sparks for years. And we’re really excited to be near completion,” said White. The decision to build the new station comes as Sparks’ population has grown from nearly 90,000 in 2005 to close to 110,000 in 2025. White emphasized the importance of strategically placing resources to ensure equitable response times throughout the city.

“As the population increases and there the traffic in this area increases you look at strategically placing your resources so that you have an equitable response time throughout the city,” said White. Fire Station 6 is designed to support a larger crew, unlike the older Fire Station 5, which was designed for only four personnel. The new station will feature an integrated dispatch system and sufficient lodging for the anticipated staffing of both an engine and an ambulance. While Fire Station 5 will remain ready to respond during major incidents, daily operations will cease. “We refer to it as temporarily browned out where there won’t be regular daily staffing but we will keep equipment and keep the station operational,” said White.
