Climber rescued from Solar Slab after 50-foot fall at Red Rock Canyon

Metroโ€™s Search and Rescue (SAR) unit conducted an air rescue Sunday night after a climber suffered a serious fall on one of Red Rockโ€™s most popular climbing routes. LVMPD received a report on Sunday, Dec. 28, around 7 p.m. of an โ€œinjured hiker on Solar Slab,โ€ which is a well-known trad (a climb where oneโ€™s own gear is placed), multipitch climbing route in Oak Creek Canyon. โ€œSolar Slab,โ€ a 1,220-foot-long route, is so popular that it is recommended to get an early start to avoid the crowds.

According to LVMPD, members of the climbing group who were with the injured victim assisted the person to the base of the route after they fell about 50 feet. Since the injured person was unable to hike out due to a head injury, they were hoisted out with Metroโ€™s AIR1. The injured victim was flown to the Bureau of Land Management helipad and transferred to an ambulance before being taken to a local hospital. Crew members hiked out of the canyon with the rest of the group.
