Police officer injured in explosion under west Lincoln bridge

One person was cited after a police officer was injured in an explosion under a west Lincoln bridge Thursday morning. Lincoln Fire and Rescue along with the Lincoln Police Department responded to an area underneath the West O Street bridge near North 1st Street around 7 a.m. for reports of trespassing in the area.

LPD said transients had a fire going, when there was an explosion. The fire investigator reported a police officer moved a blanket that was near the fire, causing something to explode. LFR said several butane cartridges were seen laying near the blanket.

The police officer was injured in the explosion, suffering burnt skin, hair and pain, according to police. They said the injuries were minor and the officer was not taken to the hospital. A 28-year-old Lincoln man was cited for criminal trespassing.
