North Platte Fire Department ignites fire safety awareness with annual student tours

VIDEO: In observance of National Fire Safety Week, the North Platte Fire Department proudly opened its doors this week, hosting a series of interactive fire station tours for local grade school students. This cherished initiative, spanning decades, is designed to instill crucial knowledge about fire safety and prevention, while also highlighting the vital role firefighters play within the community.

Fire Marshal Mike McConnell said the North Platte Fire Department annually welcomes about 300 students for various tours. This consistent engagement underscores the departmentโ€™s commitment to educating the next generation on essential fire safety practices.

During these tours, young minds are provided the opportunity to explore fire apparatus up close and participate in age-appropriate safety demonstrations. โ€œIt is great for our guys and great for the kids,โ€ Fire Marshal McConnell explained. โ€œThey get to see us in a non-emergency situation. We get to calm down and joke around with the kids. They also get to see us in our gear, so if there is an emergency, they wonโ€™t get scared and hide from us under the bed or in a closet. They get to see us and know what we look and sound like.โ€

This interaction helps build trust and familiarity, ensuring that in a real emergency, children recognize firefighters as helpers, not figures of fear. These tours are not just about education; they are about creating a profound sense of safety and approachability for the communityโ€™s youngest members, fostering a foundation of preparedness that can last a lifetime.
