Nebraska Forest Service trains students at University of Nebraska-Lincoln on fighting wildfires

VIDEO: Nebraska is training a new generation of wildland firefighters. The Nebraska Forest Service was at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln helping students earn their red card, which allows the student to help fight wildfires that break out. The training included an exercise on digging a fire line and remaining safe.

“Wildfires are becoming more prevalent across Nebraska and the United States, and dealing with those situations predominantly relies on wildland firefighters,” Ben Bohall with the Nebraska Forest Service said.

“I’ve always been really passionate about the environment, and Great Plains ecosystems are just one percent of what they used to be. Historically, so I think it’s very vital that we save them,” Olivia Clancy, a UNL senior studying environmental studies, said. In Nebraska there have already been a number of wildfires, burning 50,000 acres of grassland.
