Man and cat found dead after Lincoln apartment fire

Lincoln Police is investigating after a man was found dead following an apartment fire Tuesday morning. Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews responded just after 1 a.m. to a five-story apartment building near 14th and H streets. The building was evacuated, but the fire was mostly contained to a basement unit, according to LFR.

Firefighters broke several windows of the basement unit while working at the scene. One evacuated resident told 10/11 they were awakened by the smell of smoke. MJ Lierman, spokesperson for LFR, said the male victim was found on a couch and a cat also died in the fire.

LPD is not releasing the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered. The extent of damage and cause of the fire have not been determined. LPD will investigate the man’s death and LFR will investigate the fire.
