Hiker rescued after night stranded on Cedar Canyon bluff

A 22-year-old hiker was found safe on Oct. 7 after spending the night trapped in a canyon crevice at Cedar Canyon Wildlife Management Area, south of Gering, Nebraska. The man had been attempting to descend a bluff near dusk on Oct. 6 when he encountered a large drop and was unable to climb back up. The following morning, he shared his coordinates with someone who reported them to Capt. Sean McKeehan of Nebraska Game and Parks around noon Mountain time.

Conservation officers and wildlife staff quickly located the hiker. Gering Fire and Rescue used repelling equipment to lower a harness to the man, who was then safely lifted to the bottom of the canyon. Regional West Emergency Management Services examined the hiker, and he was released. Nebraska State Patrol and Gering Police Department also assisted at the scene.
