Grinding metal near flammable items causes Omaha house fire

The Omaha Fire Department has found the cause of a fire in a home Tuesday night. Crews were called to the fire in the area of 116th and Drexel streets shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters report that they could see heavy, black smoke from multiple blocks away. A โ€œworking fireโ€ was declared before crews got to the scene, according to a release.

OFD crews found the fire in the 2-car garage of the home and report that it had moved to the attic. They fought the fire for about 30 minutes before it was dubbed โ€œunder control.โ€ Shortly after, crews rescued a cat from the home, the release states. There are no injuries in the incident. Investigators found the fire, which caused damage of about $280,000, started from grinding metal near flammable materials.
