VIDEOS: 1 worker killed, 2 others injured in trench collapse at Massachusetts work site

PHOTOS: A worker died and two others were injured following a trench collapse at a work site on Cape Cod on Tuesday morning, officials said. Police and firefighters responded to the scene in front of The Skipper Restaurant and Chowder House on South Shore Drive in Yarmouth around 8:51 a.m., Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue said.

He said sewer construction had been going on in the area. Arrascue said the initial call was for two people trapped, and when emergency crews arrived they found two people in the trench — one buried up to their waist and another who had jumped in to rescue the other person. The second person was able to get out on his own and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

The person buried up to their waist required a complicated rescue that wrapped up shortly before 2 p.m. That person was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital. “There was a lot of collapse of the trench as we tried to remove him,” Arrascue said. “It took a lot of time and a lot of resources to get him out.”
