VIDEO: In the shadow of Silicon Valley tech companies, firefighters in Menlo Park are training with augmented reality equipment that could help them spot people and potential hazards in the smoke. One of the most dangerous things about a fire is the smoke. It is deadly to breathe and it’s blinding. The firefighters are trying out new technology that may solve at least part of the problem. In the video, you can see what it looks like when firefighters enter a burning building to look for victims… the smoke makes it impossible to see. However, with the new helmet-mounted augmented reality display that’s being tested, firefighters can see the heat source and the internal structure of everything, whether it’s stairways, doorways or ceilings.
