A fire broke out at an elementary school in Oxnard, sending up large plumes of smoke and forcing the cancellation of classes Monday. The fire was reported around 3:13 a.m. at Rose Avenue Elementary School on Driskill Street, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Firefighters arrived to find the older section of the school engulfed in flames, officials said.
“So far, we know that it’s just some structures on the school that were under what appears to be renovation – possibly a cafeteria and an office building,” Battalion Chief Nate La Russo. Crews managed to contain the fire to the older section of the campus, but part of the older structure of the campus collapsed as flames shot through the roof. Later in the morning, all parents and students were notified that classes would not be session Monday due to a power outage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
