VIDEO: Driver dead, firefighter hurt after tanker truck catches fire in southwest Houston

PHOTOS: A tanker truck exploded and caught fire on the US-90 Alternate entrance ramp at Fondren Saturday morning, according to the Houston Fire Department. The driver didn’t survive. Houston TranStar reported that the explosion and flames completely shut down the roadway in both directions, as well as three frontage road lanes. TranStar verified the crash at 9:26 a.m. Massive plumes of black smoke were seen from TranStar traffic cameras along the Sam Houston Tollway. According to HFD, the driver of the tanker, which was carrying 8,800 gallons of gasoline, is dead. HFD said a firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. Houston City Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum said air quality monitors were called to the area and that there wasn’t a shelter-in-place order. She said a CenterPoint Energy representative told her the incident caused power outages nearby.
