‘Today is a good day for us:’ After 19 months fire chief glad charges filed in shooting of 2 Alabama firefighters

VIDEOS: Nineteen months ago, tragedy struck at Fire Station Nine in Birmingham. Two firefighters were shot while at work, and one of them died from his injuries. โ€œThis is something we’ve been waiting on for 594 days, to get that call, and hopefully it provides closure for Jordan’s family, Jamal’s family, and the rest of our department. Today is a good day for us,โ€ Fire Chief Cory Moon said. Birmingham police announced Tuesday that Damien McDaniel is responsible for killing firefighter Jordan Melton and injuring Sgt. Jamal Jones. “I did have faith that we would eventually get to this day. It’s just been painful to wait and watch it all evolve,โ€ Moon said. Since that day, Moon said they have expanded their safety plan at all fire stations by adding more cameras. โ€œWe added door access control,” Moon said. “We updated our station security policy.” He said some of the first responders left their posts at Fire Station Nine — saying they just couldn’t fathom coming back here.
