Tiverton Fire Department first in Rhode Island to adopt PFAS-free gear

PHOTOS: The Tiverton Fire Department is making waves as the first in Rhode Island to equip its entire team with PFAS-free turnout gear. On Wednesday, they announced the arrival of 36 new sets of protective equipment. PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are chemicals commonly found in firefighting gear. They’ve been linked to cancer and other serious health issues, making this upgrade a significant step for firefighter safety. The department didn’t have to foot the bill alone. Thanks to gaming revenue and support from the Tiverton Town Council and Town Administrator, they were able to make this important change. Morning Pride supplied the new gear, while Northeast Rescue Systems helped the department throughout the buying process.
