New ‘Halo Law’ makes it a crime to get too close to first responders in Florida

VIDEO: If you get close to first responders, it will now be a crime in 2025 under Florida’s new “Halo Law.” This new law, Senate Bill 184, says that individuals must stand at least 25 feet from a first responder while they are on the job. “These men and women come to work every day to protect our community, and they shouldn’t have to worry about threats or acts of violence against them,” said Martis Mack, Orange County Fire Rescue’s division chief of operations. It was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in spring 2024 after legislators passed the bill earlier in the year. A first responder will give a person a verbal warning not to approach them. Lawmakers say if a person ignores that, they could face a fine or jail time.
