Michigan firefighter in stable condition after being struck by vehicle on interstate

An Arenac County firefighter is continuing to fight for his life after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 75. Sterling Area firefighters responded to multiple traffic crashes on I-75 the morning of Saturday, Jan. 11. Just before 10 a.m., a southbound vehicle driving too fast for the wintry road conditions crashed into part-time firefighter James “Jimmy” Hartwick near the 198 mile marker. The impact pinned Hartwick between the striking vehicle and a fire truck. Emergency responders took Hartwick to a Standish hospital, from which he was flown via helicopter to a Saginaw hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Hartwick remains in serious but stable condition, said Fire Chief Jason Rice.
