Massive Pennsylvania mulch fire draws around 200 firefighters, frightens residents

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Around 200 firefighters worked tirelessly to contain a mulch fire that burned for more than 24 hours and worried some nearby residents, according to county officials. The blaze, which started Sunday at a mulch plant off of Old Hanover Road in Jackson Township, extended to a nearby wooded area, prompting a swift response from fire crews.

Firefighters worked into the night and through Monday to extinguish the flames. Residents like Lydia Manno, who lives just 2 miles from the plant, described how the fire made them uneasy. “It is kinda scary having to go through all the things in your head you would have to grab if you had to leave home,” she said.

Manno added, “I didnโ€™t feel comfortable sleeping knowing I was seeing flames at eleven.” Ted Czech of York County’s Office of Emergency Management reported that around 200 firefighters, including some from Maryland, responded to the scene. Crews from nearby Lancaster and Adams counties also helped. “Itโ€™s not often in York County that you have a fire of this magnitude,” Czech said.
