Large transformer catches on fire at Pepco plant in Washington, D.C.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A transformer caught on fire at a Pepco Plant on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast D.C., according to the DC Fire and EMS Department. In a post to the X platform around 3:30 p.m., firefighters responded to the 3400 block of Benning Road after a large transformer at a Pepco plant caught fire. Officials said there were no injuries, and the buildings adjacent to the transformer were evacuated as a precaution. Foam and hazmat units have been dispatched to help extinguish the flames, officials added. DC Fire and EMS said at 5 p.m. that the transformer was still on fire and that the power had been partially isolated. Crews had begun to set up a water supply so that the fire attack could begin. In an update made at 5:30 p.m., crews had begun to attack the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
