VIDEO/PHOTOS: On Monday, Portland’s historic Messenger Bell, a fire alarm bell purchased in 1874, was relocated from the Portland Firefighter Memorial Triangle to the Fire Bureau Logistics Center. The move is part of the restoration of the David Campbell Memorial and the development of the Portland Firefighter Memorial Plaza. The bell, a significant piece of Portland’s history, was acquired following the devastating fire on August 2, 1873, known as “Black Saturday,” which destroyed 22 square blocks of the city. In response to concerns about the efficiency of alerting firefighters, the City Council decided to purchase a larger bell to summon Portland’s volunteer firefighters.
