VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Firefighters remained at the scene of a large fire at a trash transfer in Roxbury on Monday that started Sunday and quickly grew to eight alarms. Crews were called at 8:30 a.m. to the fire at the Republic trash transfer station at 65 Gerard Street. All 150 firefighters working the fire were ordered out of the building just 30 minutes into fighting the blaze.
Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke said the blaze was in a building at the facility that contains construction material and offices that also caught on fire. Boston’s construction recycling is hauled to the Roxbury transfer station, so anything from concrete to rubber, wood, and aluminum caught fire. “We don’t know what’s in that material. There could be lithium batteries in it. We’re very cautious about putting firefighters in there,” Burke said.
