Fire department in Tennessee fighting for residency change

VIDEO: The Chattanooga Fire Department is pushing for a change to the city’s residency requirements, and they are calling on the community to support their efforts at the ballot box this March. Under Chattanooga’s current city charter, firefighters can live anywhere in Tennessee. Capt. Damien Vinson, Community Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator for the Chattanooga Fire Department, explains why this rule presents challenges. โ€œFirefighters can potentially live in Memphis and work for Chattanooga Fire Department. But we can’t have those same firefighters who live in Rossville, North Georgia, or North Alabama, live in those areas and work for the City of Chattanooga.”
