Fire breaks out on bus carrying Massachusetts marching band, sending students running

PHOTOS: Around 40 students from UMass Lowell were forced to flee their bus in Westwood, Massachusetts, after it caught fire while they were traveling to a band show in Norwood on Sunday afternoon. The Westwood Firefighters union says there were multiple calls around 1:30 p.m. reporting a bus fire on High Street in the area of Grove Street. Pictures from the scene showed bright orange flames shooting from the top of the bus, as well as a thick cloud of dark gray smoke.

Band members were seen running down the sidewalk, away from the bus that had pulled over to the side of the road as flames tore through the vehicle. UMass Lowell said in a statement that it was grateful for the quick-thinking of a senior band member who reported a noxious smell and the sight of smoke and flames, and who prompted an evacuation. Fortunately, all students — mostly members of the band’s percussion section — were evacuated safely and exited without injury, school and fire officials said. One was evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation, the union added.
