Ex-owner of site of Las Vegas’ deadliest fire sentenced to prison

VIDEO: A judge Tuesday ordered the former owner of the site of the city of Las Vegas’ deadliest to serve up to four years in prison. Adolfo Orozco-Garcia, 49, originally faced 27 charges related to the December 2019 fire that killed six tenants: Donald Keith Bennett, 63; Tracy Ann Cihal, 57; Francis Lombardo Jr., 72; Cynthia Mikell, 61; Kerry Marie Odo-Baclaan, 46; and Henry Lawrence Pinc, 70.

“This is an unprecedented case,” Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth said before sentencing Orozco-Garcia to 19-48 months in prison. “There are a lot of people responsible for this. It is my job to look at what is Orozco-Garcia’s responsibility and what is justice when it comes to him.”

The fire injured 13 people and left more than 50 homeless. It is the deadliest fire within Las Vegas city limits. The fire ripped through the three-story building on 9th Street and Ogden Avenue. An investigation revealed it started when someone used their stove for heat. The flames quickly spread, filling other apartments and hallways with fire and heavy smoke. The victims all likely became disoriented by the amount of smoke, prosecutors said. According to several lawsuits, the building did not have working fire alarms or sprinklers.
