Blaze damages trucks, equipment at North Carolina fire station

PHOTOS: Firefighters in southern Columbus County put out a blaze in their own fire station Monday afternoon. At around 4:30 p.m., 911 dispatched crews to Nakina Fire and Rescue Departmentโ€™s Pireway substation on N.C. 905 near the South Carolina line. Dispatchers said that numerous passersby had reported smoke coming from the building. Two firetrucks in the metal substation building appeared to have been damaged by the fire, which is under investigation.

Upon arrival, responding crews โ€œencountered heavy black smoke emerging from the building,โ€ a Tuesday press release from Nakina Fire and Rescue stated. โ€Crews immediately entered the building, where they discovered the cab and engine area of Engine 29, a 2006 Freightliner Pumper Tanker, engulfed in flames. Tanker 29, another vehicle assigned to the station, also sustained significant damage.โ€ The press release noted that Engine 29 โ€œhad been involved in a collision less than 24 hoursโ€ before the fire while returning from assisting Horry County with the Carolina Forest fire.

Firefighters from numerous departments, including some from Brunswick County, responded to the fire, which was under control before 5 p.m. No personnel were injured during the collision or the subsequent fire, according to the press release.
