Ransome Fire grows to 622 acres northwest of Libby

Firefighters continue to battle the Ransome Fire northwest of Libby, which has now burned 622 acres and is 23% contained. The fire is located about 11 miles northwest of town in the Quartz Creek drainage on the Libby Ranger District. Crews worked through hot weather to reinforce existing firelines, using heavy equipment along the fireโ€™s edge and connecting those lines to existing containment. Officials say heavy equipment line now surrounds the entire fire perimeter, both directly and indirectly.

In areas with less fire activity, crews used hoselays and sprinklers to begin mop-up operations. Moderate fire activity was reported Monday, mainly on the southeast edge, where the fire was backing and flanking along the perimeter. Steep terrain and hazardous snags continue to challenge firefighters, but safety remains the top priority.

The incident command post and fire camp are set up at Jneils Park in Libby. The park is open to the public, but officials ask people to avoid camping spots, equipment staging areas, and firefighter briefings. Road closures are in place for both the Ransome and South Meadow fires. A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in effect, which means all aircraftโ€”including dronesโ€”are prohibited from flying in the fire area without permission. Fire officials warn that unauthorized aircraft can ground firefighting planes.
