VIDEO: Fire crews responded to a new wildfire burning in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. Officials say the Carmine Creek Fire was detected on Saturday by the Tepee Lookout and is estimated at approximately 4 acres in size. The fire is located roughly 5 miles southeast of Billie Springer Memorial Park on the Bitterroot National Forest. Strong winds helped the fire gain intensity on Saturday, but aerial firefighting resources were able to keep it in check. Fire behavior subsided some Sunday morning, thanks in part to increased cloud cover over the area. Aviation crews remained on scene Sunday, and Missoula Smokejumpers were actively working the fire. Additional firefighters from the Darby-Sula Ranger District were also on their way to assist.
