PHOTOS: A northeast Missouri garage and its contents are a total loss after a fire broke out inside it Friday morning. The blaze was reported just after 10 a.m. at the Carol Bunch residence on Crest Trail four miles south of Kirksville. First responders said heavy smoke was pouring from the building when they arrived.
Adair County Fire Chief Jeremy Davis told KTVO that the fire was started by a newly installed wood stove in the back corner of the metal, two-car detached garage. One of Bunch’s family members told Adair County sheriff’s deputies that he had just been in the garage about 10 minutes before the fire was discovered. He tried to put it out himself, but it was too far along.
No one was injured in the incident. An SUV, a motorcycle and other personal belongings were destroyed. The blaze has been ruled an accident. Adair County Fire was assisted by the Kirksville Fire Department and La Plata Community Fire Protection District.
