Morgan County house fire leaves pets dead, officials say

No one was injured but multiple pets died in a house fire Monday in Morgan County, according to a news release from the Gravois Fire Protection District. The Fire District was dispatched around 2:15 a.m. to the 31000 block of Missouri 135 to respond to the fire and requested mutual aid on the way, according to the release.

The first crews that arrived found heavy fire in the front of the home with a vehicle on fire and a brush fire, according to the release. Tankers had to supply water due to the rural location, but a narrow roadway and trees made the effort difficult, according to the release.

The Sunrise Beach and Stover fire protection districts provided mutual aid, and firefighters contained the majority of the fire damage to the front part of the home. The rest of the structure sustained light smoke and water damage, according to the news release.

No one was inside the home when firefighters arrived, but a bird and gecko died in the fire and a cat was unaccounted for when firefighters left the scene, according to the release. Neither the homeowner nor the responding firefighters were injured, according to the release. The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire. The American Red Cross assisted the homeowner, according to the release.
