The Kansas City Police Department has opened an investigation into a woman’s suspicious death. According to the Kansas City Fire Department, crews were called to E 16th Street and Elmwood Avenue at 8 a.m. on June 15 to extinguish a house fire. The fire in the single-family home was quickly put out, but firefighters said they found the body of an unidentified woman inside.
Medical professionals noticed injuries on the woman’s body that did not appear to be related to the fire. Those injuries were not specified, but KCFD said the investigation into the woman’s death has been handed over to police. Initially, KCPD labelled the case as a homicide, but it was later updated to be a “suspicious death investigation.”
“Ultimately, detectives will work with the medical examiner, who will make the determination of the cause and manner of death of the victim,” KCPD said in a statement. The victim has not yet been identified.
