Fire breaks out at Ferguson apartment complex minutes before 3-car crash down the street

VIDEO: A fire broke out at an apartment complex in Ferguson Wednesday evening, minutes before a three-car crash occurred just blocks away, police say. The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. at the Reneral Heights Apartments in the 2900 block of Canfield Court. Police say first responders received a call about a child trapped in a fire, seven different departments then responded.

Two victims were taken to a hospital, both adults. One of those victims is in critical condition after suffering smoke inhalation. The second victim is also in critical condition after jumping out of a window to escape the flames.

Authorities say at least 11 apartments had residents displaced. Jamya Millerโ€™s mom lives in one of the apartments that was damaged by the fire. She tells First Alert 4 her mom was cooking dinner when she heard a boom. โ€œBefore she could even make it to the door to escape with the dog, the entire wall and door was already on fire, so she had to jump from a third-story floor,โ€ she said.

Miller said her momโ€™s dog was rescued by firefighters. Her mom tells First Alert 4 the apartment building is putting the residents in hotel rooms for the night. โ€œThey literally have nothing. All of our baby pictures, my grandpaโ€™s ashes, everything belonging to my grandpa that my mom had left is gone, burned down to a crisp. Baby pictures, diplomas. All of that is gone,โ€ Miller said.
