VIDEO: A fire broke out at an apartment complex in Ferguson Wednesday evening, minutes before a three-car crash occurred just blocks away, police say. The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. at the Reneral Heights Apartments in the 2900 block of Canfield Court. Police say first responders received a call about a child trapped in a fire, seven different departments then responded.
Two victims were taken to a hospital, both adults. One of those victims is in critical condition after suffering smoke inhalation. The second victim is also in critical condition after jumping out of a window to escape the flames.
Authorities say at least 11 apartments had residents displaced. Jamya Millerโs mom lives in one of the apartments that was damaged by the fire. She tells First Alert 4 her mom was cooking dinner when she heard a boom. โBefore she could even make it to the door to escape with the dog, the entire wall and door was already on fire, so she had to jump from a third-story floor,โ she said.
Miller said her momโs dog was rescued by firefighters. Her mom tells First Alert 4 the apartment building is putting the residents in hotel rooms for the night. โThey literally have nothing. All of our baby pictures, my grandpaโs ashes, everything belonging to my grandpa that my mom had left is gone, burned down to a crisp. Baby pictures, diplomas. All of that is gone,โ Miller said.
