Ashes kicked from bridge suspected to be cause of natural cover fire in Adair County

The Adair County Rural Fire Department responded to a natural cover fire around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The fire occurred under a bridge off Youngstown Trail. An Adair County sheriff’s deputy on the scene said he believes someone kicked ashes from a fire on the bridge down into the Chariton River. The ashes reportedly landed on a pile under the bridge, igniting the brush. Firefighters arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze in a short time. Officials said the steel and concrete bridge should not have any structural damage.
