Ridgeland breaks ground on new fire station, honors 9/11 first responders

VIDEO: A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday at the site of the new Fire Station No. 5 on North Livingston Road. Ridgeland Fire Chief Jonathan Posey said, “It was an annexed area, also we’re relatively closer to the neighborhoods that are on the back side of Ridgeland, so it enables us to provide a quicker response for the first new engines.”

It was an important day, not just because of the new fire station, but also because it came on the 24th year after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The ceremony recognized the significance of September 11 by honoring the courage and sacrifice of firefighters, law enforcement officers and all first responders.

The new station will also serve as a training facility. “We’re going to be able to respond to calls on this side of town quicker, so normal response for this side of the city is in the 5-minute, 6-minute range right now. This is gonna draw it down to less than three,” Posey said. The chief said they would be hiring 12 firefighters to run the new station, which is expected to be completed by August 2026.
