Mississippi College trains for campus emergencies with Clinton first responders

VIDEO: Mississippi College conducted an emergency scenario exercise on its Clinton campus Tuesday morning. The Clinton Police Department, fire department and Mississippi College Public Safety participated in the drills. There were also students acting out various scenarios that first responders practiced responding to.

Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley said the main purpose of the disaster drill was to help prepare them for how they would respond to an actual emergency or major incident.

Some of the scenarios included a pair of students being hit by a car and a fire that started at a dorm from the lithium-ion battery in a motorized scooter.

“Honestly, for us, this is everyday stuff for us, so we didn’t really prepare much. The biggest threat to us right now is the lithium-ion batteries being inside a dorm,” Buckley said.

Mississippi College President Blake Thompson said, “We’re very thankful for the partnership that we’ve been able to take part in today in this exercise.”

Mayor Will Purdie said, “This partnership is one we value greatly. These exercises give us the ability to hone our skills and respond when these situations arise, so they’re very important, and we would thank the college for letting us perform this exercise here today.”

Organizers said this emergency training was already planned and had nothing to do with the shootings that happened at multiple school events over the past weekend.
