Jackson firefighters battle four structure fires over Christmas holiday

VIDEO: Jackson firefighters responded to at least four structure fires over the Christmas holiday, with most incidents attributed to accidental causes such as unattended cooking, burning debris, or electrical issues.

Investigators reported that no injuries occurred, and all fires were brought under control. Charles Felton, chief of investigation for the Jackson Fire Department, explained the seasonal increase in fires.

“Vagrants and homeless individuals are trying to find these structures to stay warm. They’re starting fires and trying to stay warm, trying to cook,” Felton said. “Also during this time of the year, a lot of people use space heaters (or) light fireplaces. So, there are a lot of variables at this time of the year as to why the fire increases.”

Fire officials noted that one fire remains under investigation, though no foul play is suspected. They are reminding residents to stay with food while cooking, keep space heaters at least 3 feet from flammable items, and follow fire safety guidelines during the winter months.
