Duluth: ‘Charge’ into fire safety with proper disposal and charging of batteries

The National Fire Protection Association is working to educate everyone on fire prevention methods to keep everyone safe. Each year, the association picks a theme to focus on. For the Fire Prevention Week of 2025, they are focusing on how to safely use Lithium-ion batteries, especially in your home.

Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day are powered by these batteries. Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small place, clustered together.

These batteries can overheat, causing the chemicals to go through thermal run away, which can start a fire, or explode in overcharged or damaged. This can easily be prevented by learning how to safely charge and recycle these batteries.

The fire department recommends to only buy listed products. Products with lithium-ion batteries will have a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
