Smoke rises from fire at apartment complex garage near Grandville

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A garage at an apartment complex near Grandville caught fire Friday, sending a plume of thick black smoke into the air. The fire sparked around 11:15 a.m. in a 30-unit garage building at Brookmeadow Apartments in the area of 44th Street and Kenowa Avenue in Georgetown Township.

Video sent to News 8 by a bystander shows large orange flames leaping from the garage and firefighters spraying water on them. The building was already fully involved by the time firefighters arrived, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said. “Several” fire departments from Ottawa and Kent counties were called in to help douse the fire.

Deputies say the garage building and the property inside sustained “extensive damage.” “No residential buildings are impacted, but some residents have been evacuated as a precaution,” a spokesperson for the apartment complex said in a statement. The cause of the fire is not yet known, the spokesperson said, going on to note “there have not been any reported issued with that unit.” No one was hurt in the fire.
