Saginaw County High School Fire Academy Continues to Grow

VIDEO: Students looking to be first responders can start training for a career with the Saginaw County High School Fire Academy. On Monday, March 10, the Saginaw City Council received an update on the Saginaw County High School Fire Academy. The academy, which is in its third year, is a joint venture between the Saginaw Career Complex (SCC), the Saginaw Fire Department, and Delta College. High school juniors and seniors who successfully complete the program are certified to the Michigan Firefighter one and two levels and earn 12 college credits. It offers high school graduates a competitive advantage to be hired as a firefighter, with the goal of filling positions in Saginaw and Saginaw County. Cody Beaver, the lead instructor for the academy, told council members the demand for the program has increased each year. โ€œWe had 15, and more wanted to come in. I actually have a request in with Delta College and the SCC to figure out if we might have to do a morning and afternoon session moving forward. Itโ€™s growing,โ€ he said. Beaver said the class size has increased 116% from the academyโ€™s first year.
