VIDEO/PHOTO: The Jackson Police Department said early Wednesday in their activity log that a 15-year-old boy has admitted to setting a fire at the old Michner Plating Facility building on N Mechanic Street Tuesday evening. Officers located the boy in the area of the fire and he was lodged at the Jackson County Youth Center for arson. The identity of the teenager was not released.
The building is considered a Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cleanup site. No hazardous levels were detected in the air after the fire, according to the Jackson Fire Department. The fire broke out around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and numerous fire departments responded to the scene along with a team from the EPA. Given the historical use of the site and potential hazards with the building, air monitoring equipment was deployed as firefighters put out the fire. The Jackson Fire Department said Wednesday that at no point did air quality levels exceed normal safety thresholds.
