Two people died in fiery plane crash near Lowell

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Two people died when a small plane crashed into a self-storage facility near the Lowell City Airport Monday, sparking a fire that sent thick smoke billowing into the air. The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Vergennes Street and Lincoln Lake Avenue, just north of the city of Lowell.

Around 9:15 p.m., the Kent County Sheriffโ€™s Office confirmed two bodies were found in the plane wreckage. The people were not identified. โ€œIt sounds like it was a small plane, from what witnesses are saying โ€” so a small, private plane that went down into the storage facility and caught fire,โ€ Kent County Sheriffโ€™s Office Sgt. Scott Dietrich said. He didnโ€™t immediately have any information about the pilot, nor about the cause of the crash. He said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Dietrich said 15 fire departments were called in to put out the fire. โ€œIt looks like the crews are getting it under control,โ€ he said shortly before 6 p.m.
