A Midland man sustained critical injuries in an apartment fire early Sunday, which claimed the life of a dog. The Midland Fire Department says the fire was reported at Village East Apartments during the early morning hours and witnesses advised the occupant of a ground floor apartment that caught fire was still inside.
Fire crews quickly located the male resident and pulled him to safety. An ambulance rushed him to MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, where he was listed in critical condition over the weekend. Midland firefighters say the victim later was transferred to Hurley Medical Center in Flint for more advanced care. His condition was not available Monday afternoon. Fire crews pulled one of the man’s dogs to safety, but another dog was found dead inside the apartment. Three other people in the man’s apartment escaped before firefighters arrived. They all reported either no injuries or minor injuries.
The Midland Fire Department contained the fire to a single unit on the ground floor. Other residents in the building were evacuated as a precaution and later allowed to return inside. The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit and Midland Fire Marshal’s Office will continue investigating what sparked the fire.
