Firefighter injured as crews battle fire at Motel 6 in Southgate

VIDEOS: A firefighter was injured Monday morning as crews were battling a fire at a Motel 6 in Southgate. The motel is located at 18777 Northline Road. Video from the scene showed fire and smoke billowing from the building early Monday. Conrad Souders who was inside the Motel 6 recalled hearing alarms and first responders at his door just before 6 AM.

“As they opened the door and let us know we had to leave, I started to realize oh there’s a fire,” Souders said. During the chaos to get out, a woman living at the motel said her attention immediately turned to her children.

“I just told my kids coats, shoes, lets go,” said Emily Locklear. “Nothing’s important to me in this world besides my children. So their safety is all I cared about.”

While crews were trying to put out the flames, a firefighter was injured and taken away by ambulance. We’re told he’s expected to be OK. “A little bit of the ceiling fell, he bumped a wall, the whole wall collapsed and he fell from the second story all the way to the ground floor,” Chief Justin Graves with the Southgate Fire Department.
