Fire claims home in northern Kent County

PHOTOS: A home is a total loss after it collapsed during a fire northeast of Cedar Springs Saturday night, firefighters said. Around 3:35 p.m., a homeowner got a notification from an alarm company that their home, near Force Avenue and Walander Street in Spencer Township, was on fire. The homeowner called 911, according to Spencer Township Fire Department Chief Alan Wright. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire after 45 minutes, but the building collapsed into the basement, where there were vehicles and four-wheelers parked. The home was a total loss, Wright said. Fire departments from Montcalm Township, Lakeview, Cedar Springs, Oakfield, Sand Lake and Grattan assisted Spencer Township.
