Detroit firefighter reaches semis on wacky, intense game show with $1 million prize

He has faced some of his toughest challenges while saving lives as a Detroit Fire Captain. His career has helped prepared him for the pressures he has faced on one of the wackiest and most intense game shows ever created.

Engine 30 Detroit Fire Captain, Ronald Mitchell, has made it all the way to the semifinals on the FOX game show, “99 to beat,” airing Wednesday, December 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Mitchell started off as one of 100 contestants on the game show where the only goal is to not finish last in each contest, one more wacky than the other. 15 contestants remain with the last person standing winning $1 million.

Fellow Engine 30 firefighter, Donnell Clayton, was also a contestant on the show, but was eliminated with 70 contestants remaining.

“This has been a once in a lifetime experience. First off, to travel the world with a good friend was great. We both felt like we won just from being on the game show,” Mitchell told MLive ahead of tonight’s semis. “The show is so much harder than it looks. The pressure was always there to do well and not finish last. And we made life-long friends and experiences.”

The game show features a series of games putting each contestant in a myriad of pressure situations. Mitchell says his career has helped him mentally prepare for anything.

“I would say being a fireman has helped me with handling the pressure and making good decisions while under all that pressure,” Mitchell added. “When you work a high pressure job, it just helps you think through problems at a point where you learn to focus on the situation and block out what’s going on around you.”

“99 to Beat” debuted on September 24 and is co-hosted by sportscaster Erin Andrews and actor/comedian, Ken Jeong, who was born in Detroi
