Deadly Millington fire shows the need for smoke alarms

VIDEO: A tragic house fire in Tuscola County claimed the lives of a brother and sister with special needs, while another person remains hospitalized in critical condition. The fire broke out last Monday evening around 11:20 p.m. at a home on Vassar Road and six people were inside. Fire crews arrived to find the home engulfed in flames.

Investigators say 53-year-old Nicholas Brown and his 47-year-old sister, Amy Brown, both died in the fire. Their obituary describes a close bond and lifelong participation in the Special Olympics.

Four other occupants of the home, ranging in age from 35 to 60, managed to escape. Three of them suffered minor injuries, while the fourth remains in critical condition.

A Millington police officer, who arrived on the scene first and attempted to rescue the Browns, also was treated and released at an area hospital for smoke inhalation. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
