Crews put out fire at Van Buren County convenience store

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A South Haven convenience store owner is grateful her business escaped significant damage from a fire over the weekend. North Side Memories, a convenience store located on Dyckman Avenue, has been open for four decades. Itโ€™s not far from the popular North Beach. In January, the convenience store closed for the winter months for some renovations. Friday was their reopening. โ€œWe got new flooring, paint, new shelving,โ€ said store owner Jamie Cowell. โ€œWeโ€™re super excited this weekend to reopen, but we had a little snag.โ€ Around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, just as employees were going to close for the night, smoke started coming from the storage room. Cowell believes an old freezer had started a fire. She said she was filled with panic and dread as she got the call about the fire. Firefighters quickly arrived to find the business filled with smoke.
