Copper Country volunteer firefighters take their pick of $1 million in used equipment

VIDEO: Like many volunteer fire departments in the Copper Country, the Otter Lake Fire Department has been working to find new equipment. โ€œEverything we have is fairly dated,โ€ Otter Lake Fire Chief Anders Kallungi said. โ€œWeโ€™ve been working pretty hard trying to update.โ€

Kallungi says his department handles between 10 and 15 fire calls and 30 to 40 EMS calls a year. Within the next few weeks, the department will be adding a new vehicle. โ€œWeโ€™ve been shopping to replace an old engine that we have, and we found one out of Massachusetts that fits our needs,โ€ Kallungi continued.

To find items they need for the truck, Kallungi and other department members traveled to a used fire equipment event in Twin Lakes Friday. Hosted by the Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department, a lower Michigan non-profit donated more than $1 million worth of gear for all members of the Copper Country Volunteer Fire Fighters Association to choose from, all for free.
