Alma mourns loss of longtime firefighter, chief

Members of the Alma District Fire Department and many others are mourning the loss of a longtime firefighter and chief. Harold โ€œHarryโ€ House passed away Thursday August 28 at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland. He was 80.

โ€œOur hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of Fire Chief Harold House. Please keep his family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers,โ€ the department posted on its Facebook page. Members of the St. Louis Area Fire Department, who House worked closely with, also shared their thoughts posting: โ€œThe greatest champion of the fire service and the absolute finest mentor to all of us. We will miss Chief House so much.โ€

Former Alma police officer and city manager Matt Schooley also weighed in saying: โ€œChief House was the epitome of a true public servant. Rest in peace Chief.โ€ House had been a member of the department for more than 50 years, joining in June 1973. After moving up the ranks he served as assistant chief for 10 years before being named chief in July 2013 following the retirement of Rick Pratt.
