$5M bond aims to help with expansion, improvements for Saugatuck Township Fire District

The Saugatuck Township Fire District is in the process of getting an upgrade. In a joint effort with the cities of Saugatuck and Douglas, Saugatuck Township is working of issuing a $5 million bond to support the fire district’s expansion, according to township officials.

This project, which aims to help the fire district “meet the need of the area’s future residential growth,” looks to include 9,200-square-feet of separate office space and living/sleeping quarters for personnel, as well as a six-bay, drive-through garage, within the new Douglas City Hall on Wiley Road.

โ€œThe emergency serviceโ€™s current facilities are insufficient to the areaโ€™s needs and inadequate to the Saugatuck Townshipโ€™s Fire Districtโ€™s mission,โ€ Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Greg Janik said. โ€œOur current facilities cannot properly house the Districtโ€™s fire and emergency medical-response vehicles and equipment and support overnight housing for emergency-service personnel necessary to maintain 24/7/365 service to the area population.”

Saugatuck Township approved a resolution to issue the bond from the Treasury Department, and enter a reimbursement and lease agreement with the fire district, on Oct. 8.
