New Bedford Fire Department promotes firefighter who was deployed to Ground Zero to District Chief

PHOTOS: Congratulations to newly promoted New Bedford Fire District Chief Thomas Carreiro! Chief Carreiro was officially sworn in during the City Council meeting on Tuesday. With over 32 years of dedicated service to the New Bedford Fire Department, his career began in 1993. He spent 19 years at Station 2, serving with Engine 1 and Ladder 1.

A proud member of FEMA’s MA USAR Task Force, he deployed to Ground Zero on 9/11. Promoted to Lieutenant in 2011, he served a decade in the Fire Prevention Bureau as an Investigator/Inspector. In 2022, he became Captain of the Marine Safety Division, overseeing Fire Boat Marine-38, the “Jesse Pacheco Jr.” With this promotion to District Chief, Carreiro steps into a new leadership role within the department, bringing decades of operational and administrative experience.
