Neighbors recount rescue efforts at Springfield house fire

VIDEO: Several people have been displaced after a house caught fire on Carver Street in Springfield that was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. “I see the fire truck come so fast and she was screaming out of the house because she was sleeping,” said one neighbor. A Tuesday morning fire in Springfield caused panic for those who live on Carver Street. One resident told us she heard a loud bang before seeing flames shooting from the house. “The flames started on the first floor and they go up and they started screaming to the lady because she was on the second floor. Nothing happened when she got out, but she started screaming like ‘Oh my dog, my dog’ and they take her out of there,” she explained. Eight people were displaced following the fire, as well as several pets.

Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte told us his crews rescued six dogs from the fire. He said one dog is still not accounted for, while one cat and one other dog died. No other injuries were reported. “There was an occupant on the second floor that had thought that she was blind, so crews went up there and got her down safely. She was uninjured,” he said.
